Sustainability in Travel: How to Be a Responsible Tourist Without Giving Up the Fun
Tourism and the Environment: A Complex Relationship
Tourism generates 8-10% of global CO₂ emissions, with flights responsible for about 2.5% (but with a climate forcing impact up to 5x higher than ground emissions, according to the Lee et al., 2021 study). The growth of international tourism brings enormous economic benefits to millions of communities, but it also creates overtourism, water resource consumption, single-use plastics, and degradation of natural sites.
The good news: the choices of the individual traveler really matter, and many sustainable actions cost nothing or even save money.
Flights: How to Reduce the Biggest Impact
- Choose direct flights: takeoff and landing consume 25% of the total fuel. A layover doubles emissions
- Travel in Economy: Business Class takes up 3-4 times more space per passenger, so it has a carbon footprint 3-4 times higher per person
- Offset your emissions: use Gold Standard or Climate Care (not all offset programs are equivalent)
- Replace short flights with the train: Paris-London, Milan-Rome, Madrid-Barcelona by train emit 90% less than flying
Sustainable Accommodation
- Look for properties with Green Key, EU Ecolabel, or Rainforest Alliance certifications
- Prefer local, family-run accommodations over large international chain hotels (the money stays in the local community)
- Reuse towels and bed linen: skipping a wash saves 40 liters of water per room
Food and Consumption
- Eat local and seasonal food: it reduces emissions related to food transport and supports the local economy
- Bring a reusable water bottle: it eliminates single-use plastic bottles (in many European countries tap water is drinkable)
- Bring a tote bag for market shopping
Respecting Places and Communities
- Do not buy souvenirs from protected species (coral, rare shells, ivory products)
- Learn about the local code of conduct before visiting religious sites or indigenous communities
- Do not share the exact location of fragile natural places on social media: digital overtourism is a real problem
Sustainable tourism is not a sacrifice. It is a richer and more conscious way to travel: it brings you closer to local cultures, reduces costs, and creates more authentic experiences.
