Cross-Country Skiing in Lapland: The Guide for Those Who Want to Ski Like the Vikings

The Sport That Built the North

In Scandinavia, Nordic skiing is not just a sport — it is part of the cultural identity. The Norwegian term friluftsliv (outdoor life) is deeply linked to the ability to move through the winter landscape on skis. Norwegian children learn to cross-country ski before they even learn to ride a bike. And when you are in the middle of a birch forest illuminated by moonlight, with the snow crunching under your skis and absolute silence all around, you understand perfectly why.

Classic vs. Skate: What's the Difference?

Classic skiing: the traditional technique, with an alternating forward movement of the legs — similar to walking. The tracks on the trail guide the skis. Easier to learn, suitable for beginners and flat landscapes.

Skate skiing: a modern technique inspired by ice skating. Faster and more efficient, it requires wider trails and more athletic strength. For beginners, starting with classic is always recommended.

The Best Destinations for Nordic Skiing

  • Sjusjøen, Norway: Norway's largest cross-country skiing system (over 400km of marked trails), 2 hours from Oslo. Traditional cabins (hytter) along the routes for warm breaks
  • Vuokatti, Finland: Olympic center with 65km of trails, Nordic ski schools for every level, professional equipment rental
  • Abisko, Sweden: trails through the national park with views of the Northern Lights in the evening. The Abisko track is artificially illuminated for night skiing
  • Bessheim, Norway (Valdres): historic lodge on the Peer Gynt-vegen with high mountain trails, overlooking the peaks of Jotunheimen

What to Rent and What to Buy

For a first experience, rent everything locally — in every Nordic resort there are rental shops with equipment in perfect condition. If you want to buy your own equipment, Swedish and Norwegian brands are the best:

  • Fischer, Salomon, Madshus: the three main brands for classic skis
  • Boots: very light compared to alpine ski boots — the heel is free
  • Clothing: highly technical, light, and breathable — Nordic skiing is aerobically intense and you sweat a lot even at -15°C

A 3-Day Tour for Beginners in Finnish Lapland

  • Day 1: 2-hour lesson with an instructor + easy 10km route with a view of the frozen lake
  • Day 2: 20km route with a halfway stop in a cabin (grilling + hot tea). Return before sunset for evening aurora hunting
  • Day 3: forest excursion with Sami guides — learn how to build a fire on the ice and cook grilled salmon on wooden poles (loimulohi)
