The Northern Lights Survival Kit: What to Pack in Your Backpack

The Northern Lights Survival Kit: What to Pack in Your Backpack

Facing the Arctic winter to hunt the Northern Lights is no walk in the park. Standing still for hours in the dark with temperatures that can drop below -20°C severely tests both the human body and your equipment. Having the right backpack can make the difference between the best night of your life and an experience to forget.

1. Backup Power (The cold kills batteries)

Lithium batteries drain at an impressive rate below zero. A phone showing a 50% charge could shut down suddenly. Golden rule: bring at least two high-capacity power banks and always keep them in an inner pocket close to your body heat, never in your cold backpack!

2. Safe Lighting (The Red Headlamp)

To see the aurora, your eyes need to adjust to the darkness (it takes about 20 minutes). If you turn on your smartphone's normal white flashlight, you will ruin your night vision. Use a headlamp equipped with a red light: it illuminates your steps in the snow without blinding you or other photographers.

3. Instant Heat and Hydration

Still muscles cool down quickly. Your backpack must always contain:

  • A high-quality Thermos filled with boiling tea or broth.

  • Chemical warmers (Hand warmers and Toe warmers). Open the packet, they are activated by oxygen and provide continuous heat for 8 hours inside gloves and boots.

"The Arctic cold does not forgive unpreparedness, but rewards those who respect it."

4. Basic Security (Micro Crampons and Whistle)

Often the best spots are located off the beaten path, on slabs of solid ice or hard-packed snow. A pair of silicone micro crampons to slip over your boots will save you from nasty falls in the dark. Always add an emergency whistle clipped to your backpack's shoulder strap.
