Husky Sledding in Lapland: How to Live the Most Authentic Experience of the North

Husky Sledding in Lapland: How to Live the Most Authentic Experience of the North

The Silence of the Forest and the Breath of the Dogs

There is something deeply primal about husky sledding. It is not just a tourist activity — it is a way of moving through the Arctic landscape that humans have used for thousands of years. The sound is what surprises you the most: no engines, no mechanical noise. Just the swish of the runners on the snow, the rhythmic breathing of the dogs, the silence of the boreal forest. And then you understand why the North gets inside you.

Where to Do It: The Best Destinations

  • Tromsø, Norway: many kennels in the valleys around the city, easily reachable on a day trip. Some farms offer overnight stays directly among the dogs
  • Svalbard (Longyearbyen): for the more adventurous, multi-day expeditions with overnight stays in Arctic tents (pulka camp) are an extreme and unforgettable experience
  • Levi/Saariselkä, Finland: Finnish Lapland is perhaps the most developed destination for this type of tourism, with professional kennels, marked trails, and combined aurora+husky packages
  • Abisko/Kiruna, Sweden: trails through the Abisko National Park with certified guides, animals in perfect physical shape

One-Day Tours vs. Multi-Day Expeditions

The 2-3 hour tour is suitable for everyone, including children from 6 years old. You learn to drive the sled, travel 15-20km through the forest, and take a break with Arctic coffee in a cabin. Cost: 100-200€ per person.

The 2-5 day expeditions are the real adventure: you drive your own sled for 30-60km a day, sleep in cabins or tents along the way, and cook meals over the fire. Physically demanding but among the most intense experiences the North has to offer. Cost: 800-1,500€ for 3 days all-inclusive.

Meeting the Dogs: The Best Part

The Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes used for sledding are extraordinary animals: energetic, social, they love the cold and working. Every visit always starts with a direct encounter with the dogs: they jump on you, lick your face, and express pure, contagious energy. It is almost impossible not to be moved. Serious kennel managers keep their animals in excellent conditions — well-treated dogs perform better.

How to Prepare Physically

No specific physical fitness is required for one-day tours, but consider that:

  • You will drive standing on a sled for 2-3 hours at temperatures of -15/-20°C — cover your hands and face well
  • You will have to brake manually on steep slopes — this requires strength in your legs and arms
  • If you fall (it happens), you have to get back up quickly in heavy winter clothing — practice doing squats 😄
After husky sledding, the silence of the forest will stay in your ears for days. It is one of those silent natural spectacles that the noise of modern life cannot erase.
