The city centre and Santa Claus Village are easy to explore, but the scale of Lapland becomes clearer when you dedicate a day to the surroundings. Forests, canyons, rapids and fells begin surprisingly close to town.
1. Arctic Circle Hiking Area: the easiest option
Roughly half an hour from Rovaniemi, this hiking area combines forests, rapids and aapa mires. It is ideal when you do not want a long drive. The Vaattunkiköngäs nature trail is about 2.4 km and works well for a relaxed half-day.
2. Korouoma: canyon and frozen waterfalls
Korouoma lies about 105 km from Rovaniemi and is one of the region's most dramatic winter day trips. The canyon stretches for roughly 30 km, and in winter small streams on its walls freeze into large icefalls. It requires more time and suitable conditions.
3. Ranua Wildlife Park
Ranua is around an hour away and specialises in Arctic and northern animals. It is a practical family option or a good choice when you want a structured day without a demanding hike. Bus connections from Rovaniemi also operate, with frequency depending on the season.
4. Auttiköngäs
About an hour east of Rovaniemi, Auttiköngäs combines rapids with old forest. It is less famous than Korouoma and can therefore feel much quieter, especially in summer and autumn.
5. Pyhä-Luosto National Park
Pyhä-Luosto is Rovaniemi's nearest national park, approximately 1.5 hours by car. The landscape opens into fells, old-growth forest and longer hiking routes. Choose it when you want a full day focused on nature.

In the Luosto area, Lampivaara's amethyst mine can be visited on guided experiences. Combining it with Pyhä-Luosto creates a day mixing geology, scenery and outdoor time.
